Lent this year begins on the 26th of February. Easter Sunday is on the 12th of April.
The purpose of Lent is to prepare for Easter through prayer, doing penance, repenting of sins, almsgiving, and self-denial.
Some add a regular spiritual discipline, to bring them closer to God, such as reading a Lenten daily devotional – the earliest known Christian example being the Félire written in Tallaght in the Ninth Century.
